Leaside Memorial Community Gardens will host its 4th FREE Concussion Education Clinic in the William Lea Room 7:00pm on Tuesday September 27th, 2022

The seminar is free, but you must REGISTER TO ATTEND in person at LMCG, or to watch our LIVE webcast. (The event will also be live streamed for those who cannot attend in person)

Continuing its commitment to making Leaside Memorial Community Gardens the safest recreational facility in the province, the Arena Board, in coordination with its primary user groups, is offering a free concussion education clinic in conjunction with the province’s fourth annual Rowan’s Law Day.

Each September, Rowan’s Law Day helps raise awareness about concussion safety. The day is named in memory of Rowan Stringer, a high school rugby player from the Ottawa area, who died of second impact syndrome after suffering three concussions in six days, while playing rugby.

The concussion education clinic is the fourth health and safety event offered by Leaside Gardens and the second to focus on concussion. The facility is grateful for the financial support of the Dr. Tom Pashby Sports Safety Fund, which enables these sessions to be offered at no charge to attendees.

The clinic will be presented by Stephanie McFarland (MSc, OT Reg. ON) from Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s Concussion Centre. The centre offers a wide range of concussion services, all with the goal of getting youth who have experienced a concussion back to the activities that are important to them. These paediatric concussion experts provide education and care to families and children with mild traumatic brain injuries (MTBI); and education and training to organizations throughout Ontario, including the GTHL.

“There have been many changes in both best-practice and legislation requirements for children and youth with concussion in Ontario. We’re looking forward to updating the Leaside community on these important changes and facilitating meaningful discussion on how to progress from concussion awareness/education to implementation and action,” said Stephanie McFarland.

All members of the community are invited to attend this important educational event, now that our kids are getting back on the ice to enjoy the activities they love so much. Parents, coaches, volunteers, and instructors will all benefit from hearing the latest information on kids and concussion.

REGISTER NOW! for our FREE seminar on concussions featuring Dr. Michael Hutchison, a Leaside fellow and MD, PhD at St Michael’s and the University of Toronto. Dr. Hutchison is well respected for his research and presentations and speaks from personal experience with concussion. Dr. Hutchison will be introduced by Dr. Charles Tator, Canada’s foremost concussion researcher. There will be a question and answer period after the presentation.

Who should attend?
Coaches, parents, students, anyone who would like to learn more about:

• What is a concussion? what happens to your brain during and following the injury?

• What can I do to prevent a concussion? What can sports do to help prevent concussion?

• What’s baseline testing? Is this something I need?

• What’s new in concussion management and rehabilitation?

• What is “normal” recovery?

• What does Rowan’s Law mean for concussion safety?

Attendees will also receive handout prepared by Dr. Hutchison for this event.

Join the Fundraising Committee, Arena Board and the user groups this Sunday for the Henderson Jersey Tour at Leaside Memorial Gardens!

Hockey hero Paul Henderson, along with a few other special guests, will be in person to greet fans and support the arena expansion fundraising initiatives!

Paul Henderson and the Henderson Jersey Homecoming Tour will be rolling into Leaside Memorial Gardens to support fundraising efforts for the expansion of the facilities, as well as to meet fans and celebrate an iconic piece of Canadian history. The free admission traveling exhibit features Henderson’s 1972 Summit Series Jersey, the hockey gloves he wore in that game, rare Canadian hockey memorabilia and interactive games and fun for all ages. Residents are encouraged to come out and enjoy the festivities.

Fundraising Gala for Leaside Arena Expansion Project

At ACE (Alliance for Cultural Equity), we are aware that the fundraising for the Arena Expansion project is in its critical phase and would like to extend a hand by organizing a fundraising dinner in support of this cause. 100 % proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards expansion project.

ACE is a multicultural, non-profit organization dedicated to addressing issues that affect immigrants in the course of their settlement and integration into Canadian society.

ACE’s mandate is to support and to empower immigrant communities, helping them to address critical issues in their neighbourhoods and workplace. Since its inception in November 2010, ACE has assisted new immigrants through its numerous services. ACE’s programs and services will constantly evolve and develop in response to the needs of the community.

Our work is guided by our vision of equality, social justice, equal access, and democracy. Our tools are advocacy, public education, community development, coalition building, and bridging with the broader community and the mainstream.

Our mission is to empower the diverse communities living in Canada in general, and women and youth in particular through leadership and innovation in service delivery, community-building and advocacy.

We also want to take the lead in building bridges and partnerships between diverse communities living in Toronto.
